right now on nbc 10 news today, decision 2016. the candidates bring their campaigns to our region ahead of tuesday's primaries in pennsylvania and delaware. we'll tell you who will be in wilmington a little bit later on. oh, the flyers are still in the playoff hunt. their stanley cup hopes are alive as they pull off another win against the capitals. a live look outside right now. we are off to a wet start for the day. seeing scattered showers this morning. a little bit heavier in some spots but eventually it will all clear out. details coming up in the first alert forecast. good morning.

this is nbc 10 news today. i'm rosemary connors. let's get to karen thomas with our new neighborhood weather. it's a detailed forecast, karen. for a day like today when you have the rain mixed in different areas. it's perfect. >> absolutely. rosemary. you hit the nail on the head when you said scattered rain. as i was driving in this morning, nothing out where i am, but the closer i got to drexel hill. downpour. it really does depend where you are. right now temperature readings on the warm side. believe it or not these are current temperatures really across the entire viewing area. we're well above where we should be this time of year at this hour. we do have a high dew point. a lot of humidity mixed into that. so if you were to step out early this morning, not only do you have rain, scattered showers to contend with, but also the humidity. you'll really feel it as you head outside. when we're looking at all of the areas here for our today's high,

we can see 70 degrees right here in philadelphia, the same for south jersey. a little cooler up in the le hih valley and 71 in delaware. we can expect most of the area to see rain this morning, at least to start. this is what radar is showing us right now. look at this. we have widespread scattered showers, just sort of closing in. you see area here in trenton, allentown north of philadelphia, the rain isn't falling there. but there is more to come. look out in harrisburg. moving west to east we have more of the shower activity to come. this will continue through our morning time. as we look wider out, we see where there is more rain. even convection at the mason-dixon line. this will push through. we have some to go but we expect this to be out of here by midday.

back with more in a bit. >> thanks for that. new from overnight one person in the hospital following a crash on the schuylkill expressw expressway. this is video from one of our traffic cameras around 3:30 this morning. two cars collided on the westbound side between gerard avenue. i got stuck in this coming to work this morning. one person in the crash was found in the eastbound lanes. we're still trying to determine if that was the person taken to the hospital. as soon as we have an update, we'll pass it along. a man is under arrest after police say they caught him slashing tires in south philadelphia. ten or more cars were damaged by the alleged tire slasher. it happened at 17th and christian streets just before 2:00 this morning. police tell us that recovered a knife at the scene. we're still trying to find out more about the suspect. we'll keep you posted on this one as well.

now to decision 2016. we are just three days away from the primaries in pennsylvania and delaware. that means a weekend of campaigning in our area for the presidential candidates. nbc 10's monique braxton is live in the digital operations center. >> vermont senator sanders is making an appearance, forging ahead in the first state today. sanders is coming to wilmington for a rally there. the event will be at the chase center on riverfront. doors open at 1:00. hillary clinton will visit wilmington on monday for a rally at the world cafè live at the queen starting at 11:15 a.m. and it is open to the public. later this morning in philadelphia, sanders' supporters will rally outside city hall. we're told they're holding a march to build local support ahead of tuesday's primary in pennsylvania. after the march, supporters will fan out across the city to knock

on doors encouraging people to vote for sanders. volunteers will also be getting out the vote for republican candidate john kasich. a rally is planned for this morning at kasich headquarters on paoli pike in chester county. he is far behind in the delegate count but promises he is staying in the race for the long haul. the delaware and pennsylvania primaries are just three days away. voters in both states head to the polls tuesday the 26th. new jersey voters get their say on june 7th. we'll keep you posted on where all of the candidates are appearing leading up to tuesday. live for now in the digital operations center, monique braxton. nbc 10 news. >> it will be a busy next couple days. both hillary clinton and bernie sanders hope to accept the nomination during the democratic national convention at the wells fargo center this summer and we've learned philadelphia is getting $43 million from the federal

government as it prepares to host the event. that money is a federal grant, a security expert tells us that, despite how large the amount may seem, it's better to be safe than sorry. thousands of people will travel to philadelphia for the dnc. the high-profile event will require a level of security that has not been used in the city or done in the city since pope francis visited last september. the $43 million will help to fund many aspects of security from the secure bus system for delegates and dignitaries to overtime hours or police, firefighters and paramedics. we spoke to one security expert via skype. take a listen. >> you would probably look at an estimate of $80 million or $120 million, for example, if a dirty bomb went off. i think this is money well spent. >> some of the money will also provide long-term equipment for use by local law enforcement. for a complete breakdown of the list go to nbc10.com or go to the nbc10 app.

the democratic national convention happens july 25th through the 28th. you can count on nbc 10 as your place to see it all. as we lead up to the convention, you can get the latest on planning for the dnc and the push for delegates by tapping the nbc 10 app. it may take days or even weeks to learn what caused prince's death, but we do have some more details about the investigation. authorities say there were no obvious signs of foul play and they do not suspect suicide. prince was last seen on wednesday night. staff members at his estate in minnesota found the 57-year-old unresponsive in an elevator thursday morning. an autopsy was done yesterday but, again, the results have yet to be released. musician and close friend sheila e remembered prince was a driven and generous man. >> he gave his all in everything that he did, and the way that he gave his all in writing songs and performing, the fans meant

everything to him. >> funeral plans for prince have not yet been finalized. ♪ ♪ let's go crazy >> you can pay tribute to prince by watching his classic film "purple rain" this weekend. amc theaters will play the movie from today through next thursday. in our area you can see it at the theaters in cherry hill, hamilton. the quest for the cup is still alive. the flyers shut out the capitals in game five last night. >> the capitals frustrated because they didn't want anything to do with game six in philadelphia on sunday. but they've got it. >> the flyers are fighting back in their quest for the cup. the team won game five against the capitals just last night. now the series comes back to philadelphia for game six. it was a big night for goalie michal neuvirth. he had a career high 44 saves. the flyers had only 11 shots in the game, the fewest by a

i am meteorologist karen thomas with your neighborhood weather. if you're heading out early, you'll want an umbrella because we have some scattered showers. satellite-radar showing us where the shower activity is right now. you see what i mean by scattered. some areas in the city of philadelphia, for example, not getting any rain at the moment. however, up here to the lehigh valley there is plenty of shower activity. darker green, so heavier rain embedded. it's on and off. some areas seeing no rain and some sheieeing heavy to moderat activity. there are lightning strikes pushing northeast to maryland over the mason-dixon line. we have a little ways to go. we anticipate the winds to pick up later this afternoon. right now, winds out of the south-southwest, six miles per hour in wildwood, 5 in

millville. 7 miles per hours in quakertown. the winds are expected to be picking up as the front clears through. go ahead and look at our time line. the forecast for philadelphia. we're on the mild side this morning. we do have a high dew point and relative humidity is up there. we're looking in the suburbs from 8:00 a.m. on. a little cooler at 59 degrees. again, scattered showers stay with us. in the lehigh valley, scattered showers with us. by 4:00 in the mountains we are looking for plenty of sun. quick traffic note. if you plan to drive near city hall, expect some traffic. the philadelphia international festival of the arts will host a massive street fair just outside the kimmel center. this video from last year, bright sunny skies. today, it will be a little bit tough. broad street will be transformed into a park with grass, a beach, and a 20-foot waterfall.

a group sdreedevoted to pea holds is street meeting today in the school in front of where this teenager was killed this week. the wilmington peacekeepers will be in front of howard high school this morning. parents and students at howard high are still waiting for answers about the death of 16-year-old amy joyner-francis. friends and family gathered last night to ask for justice. police have interviewed several people but have not made any announcements about any charges or arrests. the teen was involved in a fight

in the bathroom of the school around 8:00 thursday morning. >> for this to happen, it's just heart-breaking because she never looked for trouble in any way. she always would, you know, make sure everybody was okay, make sure everybody got along. >> prosecutors have confirmed they are interviewing people and they are looking at social media communication. but they will not make any word or any announcement on charges until the investigation is complete. people living in an ohio community are on edge this morning after the murders of eight members of the same family. the killer or killers are believed to be still on the loose. police say the victims were targeted. they were shot execution style at four different homes in a 30-mile radius in pike county. three children were spared. >> this is just -- it's heartbreaking. the one -- the one mom apparently was killed in her bed

with the 4-day-old right there. >> authorities say preliminary information suggests none of the dead committed suicide leading police to warn residents that a killer could be on the loose. police have met with members of the family to be extra careful until arrests are made. to georgia where police say a man suspected of killing five people has been found dead after taking his own life. according to authorities the suspect shot three people at one location and two others about a mile away. investigators believe the gunman went on the shooting spree after he found out his wife was divorcing him. now your nbc10 first alert weather. >> good saturday morning. i i am meteorologist karen thomas with your neighborhood weather. some areas getting showers down

at citizens bank park. no rain right now but it is quite humid outside. in philadelphia and areas around, it is feeling quite sticky if you're not getting the rain. we're looking at 62 degrees right now in philadelphia as we make our way through our time line. we're looking at about 67 degrees by mid-morning. the showers will stay with us throughout the morning. temperature-wise we're on the mild side just about everywhere. allentown 63 currently. a little cooler out here in coatesville. as we get closer to the shore, atlantic city checking in at 62 degrees. more shore numbers here. 57 in atlantic city. cape may courthouse. cooler at the point in cape may at 57 degrees. our weather story for this morning hours anyway, scattered showers. some areas seeing the rain. other areas not getting anything yet this morning. down here in south jersey, for example, look at this. plenty of cloud cover and

humidity. but the rain is not falling here. some showers just moved north of atlantic city across 322. we've got other spotty showers coming into vineland and areas of south jersey, interior south jersey. here is a shower coming through wilmington. this is what i mean by scattered shower activity. this will continue as we move through our morning because there is more rain to part of the system. there is still more rain to come through. heavier rain possible too. could get a heavy scattered shower before it's all said and done. >> as far as our future forecast, what can we expect here? we have a time line of 9:00 a.m. again, scattered sort of popup shower activity. a lot of the area clear at 9:00 a.m. then this model has at 11:30 a lot of atlantic city and parts of cape may into southern and central delaware and even philadelphia having rain by

midday. the system moving out quickly. so by later on this evening, look at this, moving west to east, the clearing, looking like showers along the shoreline. they will be the last to see the rain go ahead and get on out of here. we should be dry tonight. boy, everybody that i can run into suffering from pollen. pollen stays high despite the rain. what can we expect as we move through the rest of the weekend? well, for philadelphia anyway, showers will clear out of here by midday, but temperatures stay high. as we get to monday we're looking for temperatures to really take off. 80 degrees in philadelphia. out in the burbs by monday, 78. you can see the temperature is not doing too badly, even here in the lehigh valley. then soaring come monday. that's pretty much the story for the entire area here. for today in south jersey, a high temperature of 69. as i mentioned, down along the shoreline the last to see the rain get out of here.

they're going to have showers linger the longest, through the latter part of the day. then look at the temperatures bumping as we get closer to monday. if you got to meet the president and the first lady, what would you wear? a tux? a fancy dress? well, the future king of england decided on something a little bit more laid-back, a little more cas. the 2-year-old prince george was pressed in his pajamas and robe when he was giving a 15-minute bedtime extension to meet the obamas. the prince thanked the family for the rocking horse he was given when he was born. i bet that went something like, "george, what do you want to say to the president?" . big news about one of the biggest annual celebrations in philadelphia. find out now nbc10 and telemundo 62 are playing an important role in getting in on the action. that's next.
